NUT Directs Oyo Public School Teachers to Begin Strike Over Detained Colleagues and Learners
The Oyo State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in the state to withdraw their services indefinitely.
According to an official circular issued by the union, dated May 31, 2026, the industrial action is in compliance with a fresh directive from the national leadership of the NUT and is scheduled to commence tomorrow, Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice.
The union disclosed that the directive was given in response to the continued detention of their colleagues and learners by abductors, noting that there has been no clear sign of their timeous rescue and safe release. The leadership added that the situation has created fear and hopelessness among teachers, discouraged parents from sending their children to school, and caused tension across communities in the state.
The statement further explained that the strike action was taken to call on the government to intensify strategies towards bringing the abductees back safely without further delay. Meanwhile, the union urged all teachers to remain law-abiding and stay safe in their respective homes for maximum compliance.
The announcement was signed by Com. Salami B. Olukayode, the State Secretary, on behalf of the union's leadership, which includes State Chairman Hassan A. Fatai and State Treasurer Titiloluwa S.
