Federal Government Announces Public Holiday For Eid Celebrations
The Federal Government has officially approved a two-day public holiday to mark the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir festivities. Citizens nationwide will observe the holidays on Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026.
The announcement was made public on Monday afternoon through an official statement issued by the Ministry of Interior's Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani. According to the release, the mid-week holiday is a demonstration of the government's respect for the religious diversity and spiritual heritage of the millions of Nigerian Muslims celebrating this major Islamic festival.
In his congratulatory message to the Muslim faithful both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, underscored the core values of the season. He noted that Eid-ul-Adha remains a profound reminder of selfless sacrifice, absolute obedience to divine commands, and extended compassion to all of humanity.
Beyond the festivities, the government has urged Nigerians of all faiths to use the two-day break to look inward and pray for the nation. The statement encouraged all citizens to dedicate this period to sober reflection and collective prayers, seeking divine guidance for the country as leadership continues to pursue lasting peace, heightened security, and economic prosperity for all.
The Minister further stressed the importance of community, advising Nigerians to actively foster a spirit of brotherhood, mutual understanding, and harmonious coexistence during and after the holiday period.
