Federal Government Begins Payment of Five-Month Academic Allowance Owed Lecturers
The Federal Government has commenced the payment of five months' outstanding academic allowance arrears to lecturers in federal universities across the country, marking a significant step in the implementation of agreements reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The development follows growing concerns from the university lecturers' union regarding delays in the execution of certain commitments made by the government earlier in the year. ASUU had repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of implementation of the agreement and warned that continued delays could negatively affect industrial harmony within the nation's university system.
According to information made available to federal universities, the released funds are intended to cover accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) owed to eligible academic staff members. The allowance is designed to support lecturers in carrying out their academic, research, and professional responsibilities effectively.
The directive was communicated through the Federal Ministry of Education, which instructed vice-chancellors of federal universities to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries receive their outstanding payments without unnecessary delays. University managements were also advised to strictly comply with established financial procedures during the disbursement process.
In addition, institutions that had previously utilized internally generated revenue or other available resources to settle the allowance on behalf of the Federal Government were directed to refund such expenditures to the appropriate university accounts once the federal allocation is received. The measure is aimed at restoring funds that may have been temporarily diverted to meet lecturers' welfare obligations.
