UNIPORT Explains Reason Behind Student Union Dissolution
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has provided an update on the recent dissolution of the Students' Union Government (SUG) Executive Council at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
According to the National President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, discussions with a senior member of the university management revealed that the dissolution was due to internal disagreements among members of the former Executive Council and the expiration of their tenure.
He disclosed that the university management has assured NANS that an Electoral Committee will be constituted to oversee the affairs of the Students' Union and conduct fresh elections in line with the institution's regulations.
Akinteye reiterated that NANS remains committed to protecting the autonomy and democratic rights of students across Nigeria, stressing that the association will continue to resist any attempt to suppress or undermine Students' Union Governments.
He also urged SUG presidents and other student leaders to operate within the rules guiding their unions while promoting unity, consultation, and responsible leadership in the discharge of their duties. According to him, student leadership should be driven by service, responsibility, and cooperation rather than unnecessary division.
