ASUU-UNIZIK Suspends Strike
The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its industrial action after the full payment of members’ August 2026 salaries.
The branch announced the suspension on Friday, September 11, four days after lecturers withdrew their services over the failure to pay the complete salary for the month.
The decision was reached after the outstanding payments were made to all affected members, fulfilling the condition set by the branch congress when the strike began on September 7.
In a statement signed by the branch Chairman, Innocent Nnubia, and Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor, the union asked members to return to their normal academic and administrative duties with immediate effect.
Lecturers are expected to resume teaching and lectures, student supervision, marking of scripts, committee assignments, submission of results and other official responsibilities.
The union said the resolution to suspend the strike was in line with the position adopted at its September 7 congress, where members agreed to withdraw their services until the salary issue was resolved.
ASUU-UNIZIK also praised its members for remaining united and disciplined throughout the industrial action, saying their collective stand contributed to the resolution of the matter.
The branch, however, urged members not to relent in monitoring developments surrounding their welfare and employment conditions. It added that further information would be communicated through official union channels.
The latest development is linked to the ASUU National Executive Council’s “No Pay, No Work” position, which was activated by the branch following the delayed payment of the August salary.
With the salary now fully settled, the union has directed its members to resume their respective academic and administrative responsibilities at the university.
