NANS President Commends President Tinubu, Calls for Sanctions Against Institutions Withholding Student Refund.

NANS president praises the Federal Government's education loan initiative but urges action against institutions accused of withholding refunds and inflating fees.
The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme, describing it as a landmark initiative aimed at improving access to higher education for Nigerian students.
While applauding the President's commitment to educational development, the NANS President also praised the management of NELFUND for the prompt disbursement of upkeep allowances to eligible students across the country. However, he expressed concern over the actions of some tertiary institutions, accusing them of frustrating the implementation of the scheme through fee inflation, delayed refunds, and other practices that negatively affect beneficiaries.
According to Babatunde, several institutions required students to pay tuition fees before receiving their NELFUND disbursements but failed to refund them after the loan payments were made. He further alleged that some institutions uploaded inflated tuition figures to the NELFUND portal, describing such actions as a deliberate attempt to undermine the Federal Government's intervention.
The student leader urged President Tinubu, state governors, and relevant authorities to investigate the allegations and impose appropriate sanctions on vice-chancellors, rectors, and other institution heads found culpable. He stressed that protecting the integrity of the student loan scheme is essential to ensuring its long-term success and restoring students' confidence in the programme.
NANS reaffirmed its support for the NELFUND initiative, pledging to continue monitoring its implementation while advocating for transparency, accountability, and the welfare of students across Nigeria.
