Benue Varsity Academic Staff Begin Indefinite strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benue State University (BSU) chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike following unresolved welfare and governance concerns affecting academic staff.
The decision was announced on Monday in a statement jointly signed by the branch chairperson, Dr. Ali Sule Ako, and secretary, Prof. Daniel N. Chile. The union directed all its members to withdraw their services with immediate effect.
According to the statement, the action followed prolonged engagements with the university management, Governing Council, and the Benue State Government, which the union said failed to produce lasting solutions to several outstanding issues.
ASUU listed a number of grievances, including the non-payment of promotion arrears, unpaid pensions and gratuities for retired staff, irregular pension remittances, outstanding wage award arrears, incomplete implementation of salary adjustment agreements, unresolved taxation matters, and concerns surrounding the appointment of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
The union noted that despite years of dialogue and negotiations, authorities had not provided a formal agreement outlining clear commitments and timelines for addressing the issues raised.
ASUU further alleged that the university administration resorted to selective payments without a negotiated framework, describing the approach as inadequate and incapable of resolving the underlying problems.
As a result, the union said the strike would remain in effect until meaningful progress is achieved and binding agreements are reached on the matters in dispute.
