Legal Education Council Bans Varsity From Offering Law for 10 Years, Approves New Universities

Atiba University, Oyo State, has been barred from running a Law programme for the next 10 years following regulatory concerns raised by the Council of Legal Education.

The sanction was among the decisions reached by the Council at its third-quarter meeting held on August 13, 2026, at the Nigerian Law School headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.

The Council’s decision followed an assessment of the university’s Faculty of Law, during which concerns were raised about the institution’s facilities and its compliance with requirements for legal education.

The university was also found to have admitted and graduated Law students without obtaining the required regulatory approval.

The Council said the moratorium was necessary to ensure that institutions offering legal education operate within approved standards and regulations.

While Atiba University faces the 10-year restriction, the Council has approved five other universities to begin offering Law from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The newly approved institutions are Amadeus University in Abia State, Akwa Ibom State University, European University of Nigeria in Abuja, Oduduwa University in Osun State and Peaceland University in Enugu State.

The institutions will commence with an initial quota of 50 students each for their 100-level Law programmes.

Meanwhile, Maranatha University, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, was not granted approval to start a Law programme after the Council identified several shortcomings during its verification exercise.

The Council also approved revised admission quotas for a number of existing Law programmes across various universities.
