LASU Loses Undergraduate Following Fatal Robbery Attack
The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its students, OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph, a student of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, who died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.
In a statement issued by the university, the Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, on behalf of the management, staff, students, and the entire university community, extended heartfelt condolences to the deceased student's family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones.
Team Honorable Updates gathered that the tragic incident occurred off-campus on the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, when the student and some of his friends were reportedly attacked by armed robbers in the Iba area of Lagos State.
According to the university, upon receiving information about the attack, the institution, through the Acting Dean of Students' Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, immediately provided support and escalated the matter to the Vice-Chancellor while maintaining communication with medical personnel involved in the student's treatment. The university also closely monitored his condition throughout his hospitalisation.
However, despite efforts to save his life, OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph sadly passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
Following the unfortunate development, representatives of the university reportedly engaged with the deceased's family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and relevant law enforcement authorities.
LASU further disclosed that it is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.
The university prayed for the repose of the deceased student's soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, and loved ones the strength to bear the painful and irreparable loss.
