Kogi Varsity Rolls Out ‘Vice-Chancellor For A Day’ Initiative

The management of the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, has introduced a “Vice-Chancellor for a Day” initiative aimed at promoting leadership, academic excellence and students’ participation in university administration.

The initiative was unveiled by the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Gbenga Ibileye, as part of activities marking his first 100 days in office.

Prof. Ibileye, who assumed office as the fourth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university on February 16, 2026, disclosed that the programme would give deserving students the opportunity to symbolically occupy the office of the Vice-Chancellor for a day.

According to him, the initiative is designed to celebrate academic excellence while encouraging students to develop leadership qualities and a stronger sense of responsibility within the university community.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that the programme reflects the administration’s commitment to investing in students and creating opportunities that inspire excellence beyond the classroom.

Speaking on achievements recorded within the last 100 days, Ibileye revealed that the institution secured major funding support, including a N3 billion intervention fund through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

He also disclosed that the university established a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences to strengthen research, innovation and advanced technological training.

According to the university management, the centre is expected to position the institution as a hub for innovation, postgraduate training and digital skills development in the region.

The Vice-Chancellor further stated that the National Universities Commission granted full accreditation to eight academic programmes, including Mass Communication, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Sociology.

He added that the development further strengthens the institution’s academic reputation and confirms the quality of teaching and learning facilities available in the university.

Ibileye also highlighted improvements in water supply and sanitation infrastructure at the institution’s permanent campus, noting that boreholes and lavatory facilities were renovated to improve students’ welfare.

On the institution’s future plans, the Vice-Chancellor said the university had advanced its Vision Plan 2026–2031 to the White Paper stage, pending formal adoption by the Governing Council.

He also revealed that pioneer students of the College of Health Sciences had successfully progressed into clinical training, describing the development as a major milestone for medical education in Kogi State.
