NANS Threatens to Suspend Academic Activities in Osun Ahead of Governorship Election

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has threatened to shut down academic activities across tertiary institutions in Osun State ahead of the August governorship election over growing security concerns.

In a statement jointly signed by the Coordinator, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, and the Secretary-General, Comrade Ojetola Babatunde Yussuf, the association expressed concern over rising incidents of political violence, shootings, intimidation and killings in the state, warning that students should not become "sacrificial lambs" in the political process.

NANS stated that the worsening security situation no longer guarantees the safety of students or supports the smooth conduct of academic activities. The association noted reports of gunshots in communities surrounding some tertiary institutions, particularly at night, which have heightened fears among students living both on and off campus.

The student body also criticised the absence of a clearly communicated security plan to safeguard campuses, host communities, student residences and major transportation routes during the election period.

While affirming students' constitutional right to participate in the electoral process, NANS cautioned political parties against exploiting students for voter registration and other election-related activities. It stressed that students must not be pressured, profiled or used as political tools.

The association advised students to avoid sharing sensitive personal information with unidentified individuals or entering unbranded vehicles operated by persons whose identities cannot be verified.

NANS further urged students in Osun State to vote based on conscience, competence, credibility and candidates' commitment to education and student welfare, rather than intimidation, inducement or campaign promises. It added that students should prepare to return home if the security situation continues to deteriorate.
