FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Mark Democracy Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year's Democracy Day celebration in Nigeria.

The declaration was made on behalf of the Federal Government by the Minister of Interior, who urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation's democratic journey and the sacrifices made by individuals who fought for the country's return to democratic governance. Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 in recognition of the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest elections in Nigeria's history.

The Federal Government noted that Democracy Day provides an opportunity for citizens to celebrate the nation's democratic achievements, while also reflecting on the responsibilities required to sustain democratic values, peace, justice, and national unity. The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance across the country.

Nigerians across the country are expected to participate in activities marking the occasion, while government offices, schools, banks, and many private establishments are expected to observe the public holiday.

As the nation marks another Democracy Day, citizens have been encouraged to remain committed to the principles of democracy, national development, and peaceful coexistence.
