NANS Demands Halt to National Learner ID, Says Students Must Be Consulted

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the proposed introduction of the National Learner Identification Number (LIN), describing the initiative as unnecessary and a duplication of Nigeria’s existing identification system.

In a press release dated September 8, 2026, the student body also accused the National Orientation Agency (NOA) of exceeding its mandate by championing the proposed identification system without adequately involving students in the policy process.

NANS acknowledged the importance of maintaining an accurate database within the Nigerian education system but argued that introducing a separate identification number for learners was unjustified, given that Nigerian citizens already possess the National Identification Number (NIN).

According to the association (NANS), government agencies should instead strengthen and maximise the existing national identification system rather than establish another identification structure for students.

The association emphasized that Nigerian students are key stakeholders in the education system and should be consulted on policies affecting their academic lives, records, welfare and future.

“Anything done for us without us is outrightly against us,” NANS stated, emphasising its position that students must be actively involved in policies directly affecting them.

NANS further criticised the NOA, arguing that the agency had moved beyond its statutory responsibility. It maintained that while NOA was established to promote communication between government and citizens, provide feedback and encourage citizen participation, it should not assume responsibility for imposing a new identification system on students.

The association consequently called on the Federal Government to immediately halt the introduction and further implementation of the National Learner Identification Number.
