UNIBEN to Introduce Six New Degree Programmes
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval for the commencement of six new undergraduate programmes and additional postgraduate courses at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), beginning from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The development was disclosed on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in a statement issued by the university's Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire.
According to the statement, the approval followed a successful resource assessment exercise conducted by the National Universities Commission on the proposed programmes, confirming that the institution possesses the necessary facilities, personnel, and academic capacity required to run the courses.
Honorable Updates gathered that the newly approved undergraduate programmes include B.Sc. Speech and Language Therapy, B.Sc. Occupational Therapy, B.Sc. International Relations, B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies, Bachelor of Education (Primary Education), and Bachelor of Nursing Science.
The university noted that the introduction of Speech and Language Therapy as well as Occupational Therapy aligns with ongoing efforts by the Federal Ministry of Education to address the shortage of qualified professionals in critical areas of Nigeria's healthcare system.
The statement further revealed that the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme will be operated in collaboration with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), providing students with access to quality clinical training and practical experience.
In another major development, UNIBEN's Centre of Excellence in Space Science Technology and Applications also received approval to commence postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Master's and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in Remote Sensing and Aeronautics Engineering.
The approval is expected to strengthen the university's contribution to research, innovation, and technological advancement, particularly in the areas of space science and engineering.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, expressed gratitude to the National Universities Commission for approving the programmes.
He reiterated the institution's commitment to maintaining high academic standards while expanding opportunities for students across various disciplines.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the university remains focused on responding to emerging national needs through the introduction of relevant programmes that will equip graduates with the skills and knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to national development.
