UNILORIN Student Union Election Process Set to Kick Off as Senate Constitutes UISEC, Disqualifies Five Nominees
The Student Union Senate Council of the University of Ilorin convened its second emergency sitting on June 6, 2026. The sitting commenced promptly at 12:30 p.m. and was presided over in accordance with established legislative procedures of the Council.
At the commencement of proceedings, the House observed a one-minute silence in honour of the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who passed away on the same date, June 6, 2026. The solemn observance was held as a mark of respect for his service and contributions to the institution.
The session proceeded with the consideration and constitution of the UNIVERSITY INDEPENDENT STUDENTS’ ELECTORAL COMMISSION (UISEC), following the presentation and deliberation on the relevant bill before the chamber. It is recalled that on Thursday, June 4, 2026, the Senate had released the list of nominees for UISEC, comprising two nominees from each faculty. The notice further provided that members of the university community were permitted to submit petitions or objections regarding any nominee on or before Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
Following the expiration of the petition window and subsequent review, the Senate proceeded on Saturday to the official confirmation stage. The nominees were formally called before the House for identity verification and validation. Thereafter, successful candidates were administered the oath of office in line with constitutional provisions governing the establishment of the commission.
However, during the verification and screening process, a number of nominees were found to have failed to meet the stipulated eligibility requirements for membership of the commission. The grounds for disqualification included failure to complete a minimum of two academic sessions, unresolved administrative concerns, and other eligibility inconsistencies as prescribed by the UISEC guidelines. In total, five nominees were disqualified. The affected individuals are as follows:
1. Kareem Nuraen Abiodun – Linguistics and Nigerian Languages
2. Aina David Victor – Political Science
3. Akinola Abdulazeez Akinkunmi – Library and Information Sciences
4. Oraka Samuel Toluwanimi – Industrial Chemistry
5. Sheu Abdulbasit Adaramaja – Optometry and Vision Science
