NUT Rejects Calls for School Closure in Borno Despite Security Challenges

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has stated that schools in Borno State will remain open despite ongoing security concerns in some parts of the state.

Speaking in Maiduguri, the union's National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Yusuf Tom, said shutting down schools would only advance the objectives of terrorists who seek to disrupt education. He emphasized that teachers would continue their duties and would not be intimidated by threats from criminal groups.

Tom clarified that the union has not called for the closure of schools but is instead advocating improved security measures to protect students, teachers, and educational facilities. He noted that education remains a fundamental right and must continue despite security challenges.

The NUT also reaffirmed its support for a planned nationwide protest aimed at drawing attention to the abduction of students and teachers, while urging the government to intensify efforts to secure their release and strengthen safety in schools across the country.
