JAMB Punishes Student Over Fake UTME Result

The three-year ban imposed on Anambra student, Ejikeme Mmesoma, by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over the manipulation of her 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) result has officially come to an end, making her eligible to participate in the examination again.

Mmesoma became a subject of national discussion in 2023 after claiming she scored 362 in the UTME. The claim was later disputed by JAMB, which maintained that her authentic score was 249 and alleged that the result slip she presented had been altered.

To investigate the matter, the Anambra State Government constituted an independent panel, which examined evidence from JAMB, Mmesoma, her school, and other relevant parties. The panel eventually upheld JAMB's position, confirming that her actual score was 249.

According to the panel's findings, Mmesoma admitted to manipulating the result before printing it and later apologised to JAMB, the Anambra State Government, and her school for her actions.

Following the investigation, JAMB cancelled her 2023 UTME result and barred her from participating in any examination conducted by the board for three years in line with its regulations on examination malpractice.

The incident also led to the withdrawal of a scholarship previously awarded to her, while her father publicly apologised to JAMB and Nigerians. Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo also directed that she undergo counselling and psychotherapy.

With the expiration of the sanction this month, Mmesoma is now eligible to register for the UTME again if she decides to pursue admission into a tertiary institution. Her case remains one of the most notable examination malpractice incidents in Nigeria's education sector, often referenced in conversations on academic integrity and digital result verification.
