NANS Rejects UNIPORT Students' Union Dissolution, Demands Immediate Reversal
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the decision by the University of Port Harcourt management to dissolve the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Hall Representatives, and all other students’ union activities.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS described the action as a violation of students' democratic rights, stressing that elected student leaders cannot be removed without due process, transparency, and a fair hearing.
The association acknowledged the university's right to investigate allegations of misconduct but insisted that accountability should not be used to undermine students' representation or democratic institutions.
NANS called on the university management to immediately suspend the dissolution order, disclose the specific allegations against the union officials, establish an impartial investigative panel, guarantee the affected student leaders a fair hearing, and avoid any form of intimidation or victimisation.
The association further stated that it is engaging relevant stakeholders and will take all lawful steps to protect the rights, welfare, and democratic institutions of students at the University of Port Harcourt, while demanding the immediate reversal of the dissolution pending the outcome of a transparent investigation.
