FG Suspends Proposed Increase in WAEC, NECO Registration Fees
The Federal Government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
In a press release issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Education announced that the letter conveying the proposed fee adjustment, dated June 18, 2026, has been withdrawn to allow for broader consultations with key stakeholders before any final decision is made.
According to the Ministry, the proposed fee review was prompted by rising operational costs associated with conducting credible national examinations, including logistics, security, printing of examination materials, technology deployment, and quality assurance.
However, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold to ensure an inclusive, transparent, and evidence-based decision-making process.
The Ministry stated that it will engage examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, administrators, parents' associations, organised labour, and other education stakeholders to ensure that any future decision is fair, sustainable, and protects access to quality education.
As a result, the proposed increase in WAEC and NECO examination registration fees will not take effect until the consultation process is concluded.
The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising the welfare of students, ensuring equitable access to education, and keeping the public informed throughout the review process.
