UNICAL Suspends 19 Students
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended 19 students for one academic session over alleged involvement in examination malpractice.
The decision was reached following the recommendations of the university’s Students’ Disciplinary Committee, which were considered and approved by the Senate of the institution.
The suspension was communicated through an official letter signed by the Director of Administration, Dr Citizen Ekpo, on behalf of the Registrar, Dr Chukwuka Icha.
According to the university, the affected students will not be allowed to participate in academic activities during the 2025/2026 academic session and are expected to resume their studies in the 2026/2027 academic session after completing their suspension.
The Head of the University’s Public Relations Unit, Mr Effiong Eyo, confirmed the development, stating that the action followed the proper disciplinary process and the approval of the Senate after reviewing the committee’s recommendations.
The suspended students are from different faculties and departments across the university, including Administration, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Arts, Education, Allied Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Environmental Sciences, Nursing Science, Peace and Conflict Studies, Science Laboratory Technology, Estate Management, and Marketing.
The university management has directed Deans, Heads of Departments, and relevant administrative units to ensure strict implementation of the suspension order.
The institution reiterated its commitment to protecting academic standards and maintaining integrity by taking decisive action against examination misconduct.
UNICAL stated that such measures are necessary to uphold discipline and ensure that academic qualifications awarded by the university continue to maintain credibility.
