University suspends professor over Facebook post.

The management of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has suspended a professor in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, Prof. Nnamdi Chinwendu Nwaeze, over a social media post concerning the welfare and remuneration of university lecturers.

The university announced the suspension in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesman and Deputy Registrar, Chijioke Nwogu.

Nwaeze was reportedly suspended on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following a Facebook post in which he raised concerns about the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ABSU branch.

In the post titled, “ASUU-ABSU Strike: Matters Arising,” the professor alleged that lecturers at ABSU were among the least paid university academics in Nigeria.

He claimed that members of ASUU-ABSU were still being paid under the 2009 ASUU/FG salary structure, despite the existence of newer salary agreements, which he said had yet to be implemented at the university.

Nwaeze further alleged that lecturers promoted between 2023 and 2026 had not received salaries corresponding to their new ranks, while some staff members were owed salaries for several months.

He also raised concerns over unpaid arrears, unremitted union dues, cooperative deductions and Earned Academic Allowances, among other issues.

The professor particularly drew attention to the salaries of senior academics, claiming that some professors at ABSU earn less than ₦400,000 monthly.

He compared this with the income of commercial tricycle operators, arguing that a Keke driver making a daily net income of ₦15,000 could earn about ₦450,000 in a month.

Nwaeze also compared the remuneration of ABSU professors with that of lecturers in federal and other state universities, claiming that professors in some institutions earn between ₦1.3 million and ₦1.4 million monthly.

The professor's post also criticised the alleged disparity between the remuneration of university lecturers and that of some political office holders in Abia State.

He called on the state government to address the concerns of ASUU-ABSU members and resolve the issues that led to the ongoing strike.

Reacting to the post, the university management described its contents as “inimical to the interests of the university” and “uncomplimentary to the visitor of the university,” Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.

According to the university, an investigative panel has been constituted to examine the matter.

Nwogu said Nwaeze’s suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place pending the outcome of the investigation.
