Varsity Sacks Eight Staff Over Theft, Result Alteration, Others
The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has dismissed eight members of staff over various acts of misconduct, including examination malpractice, absenteeism, abandonment of duty, falsification of examination results, vandalism, and financial misconduct.
The disciplinary actions were approved during the 174th meeting of the University's Governing Council after it considered reports from its disciplinary committee. The decisions were announced in a statement issued by the institution's Registrar and Secretary to the Council.
Among those dismissed was a professor from the Department of Nursing Science over allegations relating to examination misconduct. Several other academic and non-academic staff were also relieved of their appointments for prolonged absence from duty and abandonment of their official responsibilities.
The university also dismissed a staff member from the Works Department over alleged vandalism and theft of armoured cables, while another staff member from the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry lost his appointment over the alleged falsification and alteration of examination results.
In a separate case, a staff member attached to the Alumni Relations Office was dismissed for the alleged unauthorised withdrawal of funds from an alumni trust account.
Beyond the dismissals, the Governing Council approved disciplinary measures against another academic staff member, delaying his promotion by two years and ordering the forfeiture of half of his withheld salary over negligence of duty and examination-related misconduct.
