SSANU Threatens Indefinite Strike, Gives FG Ultimatum

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to fully implement the 2026 agreement with the union and pay outstanding salary arrears.

The union threatened to embark on a total and indefinite strike if its demands are not met at the expiration of the ultimatum.

In a communiqué issued after its 56th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, SSANU said implementation of the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement, which took effect on January 1, 2026, had started in some universities but remained incomplete and uneven across the country.

Among its demands, the union called for the immediate payment of outstanding arrears under the 2026 CONTTA salary structure, as well as the remaining two months’ salaries withheld during the 2022 industrial action.
SSANU also demanded payment of one-year arrears arising from the 25% and 35% salary increases.

The union further called for increased funding for universities, particularly in areas such as electricity, laboratories, workshops, libraries, ICT facilities, security and maintenance.

SSANU warned that if the Federal Government fails to address its demands within the 14-day period, members could commence an indefinite strike without further notice.
