COREN, NUC and JAMB Introduce Admission Quotas for Engineering Programmes from 2026/2027

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has approved the implementation of strict admission quotas for engineering and technology programmes in Nigerian universities.

The new policy, which will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, is designed to improve the quality of engineering education by ensuring that universities admit only the number of students their available facilities, laboratories, equipment, and academic staff can adequately support.

According to a joint statement by the three regulatory bodies, the quota system is intended to address the challenges posed by overcrowded classrooms and overstretched training facilities, which have negatively impacted the quality of engineering graduates.

"Engineering education requires adequate practical training and hands-on experience. The approved quotas will ensure that institutions maintain acceptable standards and produce graduates with the competencies required for national development," the statement said.

The agencies further disclosed that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will integrate the approved admission quotas into its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to prevent institutions from exceeding their allocated limits.

Universities that fail to comply with the approved quotas risk sanctions, including the withdrawal of accreditation for affected engineering programmes.

Prospective candidates have been advised to confirm the approved admission quotas for their preferred engineering programmes with their respective institutions before applying.
