Kwara Poly suspends lecturer for caning students

The Management of Kwara State Polytechnic has officially reacted to a viral social media video showing a lecturer physically caning individuals on campus, announcing the immediate suspension of the involved staff member.

In an official statement released by the institution's Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba, the management clarified that the individuals seen in the footage are not regular students of the polytechnic. Instead, they were identified as Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) candidates who had reportedly arrived late for their ongoing examinations.

While the exact motives behind the lecturer's actions are still being investigated, the polytechnic management strongly condemned the method used, emphasizing that the approach was entirely inappropriate and reaffirming its strict policy against all forms of violence or corporal punishment. The management reiterated its core belief that educational environments must be built on mutual respect, understanding, and constructive guidance, noting that there are far more humane and effective methods to teach discipline.

Consequently, the management has suspended the lecturer from all academic duties with immediate effect, pending the conclusion of a formal investigation. The polytechnic expressed gratitude to the public and institutional stakeholders for raising concerns about the video, assuring the public of its commitment to maintaining the integrity and core values that Kwara State Polytechnic is known for. Management added that strategic steps are currently being determined to ensure a similar incident does not occur again in the future.
