OAU Loses Final-Year Student

The Management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has expressed condolences following the death of a final-year student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

According to the university, the incident was reported on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m., after an emergency involving the student was reported at an apartment in the Damico Area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, disclosed in a statement that the institution’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was immediately deployed to the location after receiving the report.

The Nigeria Police were also contacted, with officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joining the university security team at the scene.

The student was later taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor reportedly confirmed the death.

OAU said it has provided relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the Police to support ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

The university further stated that the appropriate student affairs authorities had been informed to ensure necessary follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and support of students affected by the incident.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased student’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues, while also acknowledging the possible emotional impact of the incident on members of the university community.

Management urged students and other members of the university community to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information or speculation while the Police investigation continues.

The university also encouraged students facing serious emotional distress, relationship challenges, financial difficulties or other personal problems to seek support from trusted individuals and the appropriate university support structures.
