NYSC Introduces New Documentation Requirement for Corps Members, Fixes Implementation Date

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced a fresh requirement that will affect prospective corps members beginning from the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1 orientation exercise, as part of efforts to tighten its mobilisation process and curb certificate-related fraud.

The development was disclosed on Monday in Abuja by the Director-General of the scheme, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, during a pre-mobilisation workshop themed around improving accountability and compliance in the system.

According to him, all prospective corps members will now be required to obtain and present a compliance certificate from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) before they can be cleared for national service.

He explained that the decision aligns with a Federal Executive Council directive aimed at strengthening verification processes, reducing the incidence of fake credentials, and ensuring that only properly qualified graduates are admitted into the scheme.

Nafiu noted that the mobilisation process is not solely handled by NYSC, stressing that it involves collaboration among several key institutions including the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), tertiary institutions, and other education regulatory bodies.

He added that stronger cooperation among these stakeholders remains essential to ensuring accuracy in graduate records and a smoother transition from school to service year.

The NYSC boss also cautioned institutions against any form of manipulation or distortion of graduate data submitted for mobilisation, saying the scheme would not hesitate to enforce compliance where necessary.

He further emphasised that the organisation is embracing digital reforms and stronger internal verification systems to improve transparency and efficiency in its operations.

Speaking at the same event, the Director of Corps Mobilisation, Mrs. Rachel Idaewor, described the workshop as an important platform for improving coordination among all parties involved in the mobilisation process.

She said although some progress has been recorded in recent years, more work is still needed to address gaps and improve the overall system.

Idaewor also highlighted the growing role of technology in streamlining mobilisation procedures, noting that digital tools will help improve data accuracy and reduce errors.

She called on Student Affairs Officers across tertiary institutions to ensure strict accuracy in records submitted to NYSC, stressing that institutional integrity remains key to the success of the process.
