ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Allowances in Four State Universities

The Yola Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on industrial action if the governments of Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states fail to implement and pay outstanding Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and other negotiated entitlements owed to lecturers in their state-owned universities.

The warning was issued on Monday during a press briefing in Yola by the ASUU Yola Zonal Coordinator, Dani Mamman. He expressed concern over the continued failure of the affected state governments to implement agreements reached with the union.

According to Mamman, the unresolved issues include the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU negotiated agreement, as well as the failure to pay the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).

The affected institutions are Adamawa State University, Mubi; Borno State University; Taraba State University, Jalingo; and Yobe State University, Damaturu.

ASUU accused the state governments of repeatedly neglecting agreements that had been discussed, negotiated, and documented over time, despite several engagements with the union. Mamman stressed that negotiated agreements are binding commitments and should be honoured without further delay.

The union is demanding the immediate implementation of the approved allowances and the payment of all outstanding arrears. It warned that it has exhausted all peaceful avenues of engagement and may be left with no option but to commence industrial action if the governments fail to act.

ASUU further stated that any disruption to academic activities in the affected universities would be the responsibility of the state governments for failing to fulfil their commitments.

As of the time of this report, the governments of Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states had not officially responded to the union's demands.
