UNILORIN Announces Seven-Day Mourning Period

The University of Ilorin has announced a seven-day mourning period following the passing of its former Vice Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, OON, who died on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the age of 68.

The decision was approved by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, as a mark of honour and recognition of Prof. Ambali's immense contributions to the growth and development of the institution.

According to a statement issued by the University's Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, all flags within the University and its affiliated establishments will be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which commenced on Saturday.

Prof. Ambali served as the ninth Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin from 2012 to 2017. During his tenure, he was widely acknowledged for his commitment to academic excellence, administrative discipline, and institutional advancement. Until his passing, he remained actively involved in the educational sector as Chairman of the Governing Council of Kwara State University (KWASU).

Reacting to the development, Prof. Egbewole described the late academic as an exceptional administrator, respected scholar, and dedicated leader whose impact on the University would continue to be remembered for generations. He noted that Prof. Ambali played a significant role in strengthening the institution's reputation and advancing its vision.

The Vice Chancellor also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the Ilorin Emirate, members of the University community, and all those affected by the loss.

Please kindly note that the declaration of a seven-day mourning period does not imply a seven-day holiday or suspension of academic and administrative activities. Rather, it means that the University is officially observing a period of mourning, during which all flags within the University and its affiliated establishments will be flown at half-mast throughout the seven-day period, which commenced on Saturday. This is a symbolic gesture of respect and honor for the deceased. Flying flags at half-mast signifies grief, remembrance, and solidarity with those affected by the loss. Therefore, the mourning period should not be misconstrued as a break from normal University activities unless otherwise officially communicated by the University Management.
