JAMB to Allow Candidates Use Personal Devices for UTME
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to introduce a new “bring your own device” arrangement for candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), beginning in 2027.
The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, made this known on Monday during the 2026 policy meeting on admissions into tertiary institutions held in Abuja. He explained that the initiative would allow candidates to sit for the examination using their personal computers or similar devices.
According to him, a secured flash drive will be provided and inserted into the devices during the examination to prevent malpractice and ensure examination integrity.
Oloyede noted that the new model is expected to reduce operational costs and make the conduct of the examination easier to manage. He also said it would address recurring complaints from candidates, especially cases where systems reportedly shut down during exams.
He added that the innovation is part of broader reforms being planned by the board to improve efficiency and smoothen the examination process from 2027.
Meanwhile, the JAMB registrar also released details of top performers in the 2026 UTME. Jesudunsin Owoeye from Ekiti State emerged as the highest scorer with 372 marks out of 400. She sat for the examination in Ogun State and selected the University of Lagos to study Medicine and Surgery.
Following her is Ikenna Enwere from Imo State, who scored 370. He took the exam in Lagos and chose Nile University for Computer Science.
In third place is Ayomide Bamisile from Ondo State with a score of 369. He opted for the Federal University of Technology, Akure, where he intends to study Software Engineering.
