UniAbuja Gets New Registrar, Librarian

The Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja, has approved the appointment of Malam Alkasim Musa Umar as the substantive Registrar and Dr. Rose Lade Mommoh as the substantive University Librarian.

The appointments were ratified during the Council's 101st meeting, chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso. Both appointments took effect from July 10, 2026, and each official will serve a single five-year tenure in line with the university's regulations and the relevant provisions of the Universities Act.

Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, expressed confidence in the newly appointed officials, noting that their experience and expertise would contribute significantly to strengthening the university's administration and library services.

According to the university, Malam Umar holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri and has completed several professional training programmes. He has served the institution for over 17 years in various administrative capacities, including Academic Affairs, Establishment, the TETFund Desk Office, and the Institute of Education, where he most recently functioned as Deputy Registrar.

Throughout his career, Umar has also participated in several university committees and represented the institution at international academic and administrative events.

Similarly, Dr. Mommoh, the newly appointed University Librarian, is an experienced librarian and information scientist with more than 25 years of service at the university. She earned her Bachelor of Library Science from the University of Maiduguri, a Master's degree from Bayero University, Kano, and a PhD in Information Science from the University of Maiduguri.

She has held several leadership positions within the university library system and, before her appointment, served as the Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Library and Information Science. Dr. Mommoh has also contributed extensively to academic research through numerous publications and conference presentations within and outside Nigeria.
