UNILORIN Alumni Set to Build Male Hostel, Guest House

The University of Ilorin Alumni Association has approved the construction of a 204-bed male hostel and a guest house as part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure and contribute to the institution's long-term development.

The decision was reached during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Association, where members also considered several resolutions aimed at improving alumni engagement, governance, and financial sustainability.

Honorable Updates gathered that the proposed hostel project is intended to complement the existing female hostel already provided by the Association, while the guest house will serve as accommodation for visitors and create an additional source of income to support alumni activities and future projects.

To ensure the successful delivery of the guest house project, the Council constituted a special committee made up of representatives from the Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, and Delta State chapters. The committee has been tasked with mobilising financial support from members, attracting investors, and exploring Public-Private Partnership (PPP) opportunities.

The Council also approved an upward review of dues payable by graduating students. According to the Association, the adjustment became necessary in view of current economic realities and the increasing financial commitment required to sustain its programmes and developmental initiatives.

As part of efforts to improve efficiency across the Association, the NEC directed that state chapters should be restructured and strengthened to better serve members, while encouraging the establishment of additional branches where necessary. The University of Ilorin Branch was also identified as a priority because of its strategic importance and large membership base.

On matters relating to governance, the Council reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional provisions guiding the Association's operations. It warned against acts of impersonation by former officials and maintained that no individual should remain in office beyond the tenure stipulated by the Association's constitution.

The meeting also reviewed the performance of chapters across the country. While commending the Lagos and Kwara State chapters for their outstanding commitment and active participation, the Council observed that several other chapters require renewed efforts in membership mobilisation and service delivery.

Honorable Updates further gathered that the NEC acknowledged several achievements recorded under the current administration. These include recognition of outstanding graduating students, honouring distinguished alumni for their professional accomplishments, and the successful organisation of the EmployableMe programme, an initiative designed to prepare final-year students for the labour market through practical career development training.

The Council equally appreciated the donation of chairs to the University's Banquet Hall by the University of Ilorin Engineering Class of 2001, describing the gesture as another example of alumni commitment to the institution's growth.
