LASU Emerges Overall Best University in West Africa
Lagos State University (LASU) has once again emerged as the Overall Best University in West Africa in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings, reaffirming its continued leadership in sustainable university development.
The result, announced at the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026 Results and Awards Ceremony in Baku, Azerbaijan, places LASU 493rd globally out of 2,016 universities across 110 countries. This marks a significant improvement from its 760th position in the 2025 ranking.
LASU has maintained its position as the No. 1 university in West Africa for five consecutive ranking cycles, following its participation in the UI GreenMetric rankings in 2022. The University has topped the regional ranking in 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and now 2026.
The University’s global position has also recorded remarkable growth. LASU moved from 799th globally in 2024 to 760th in 2025 and 493rd in 2026, representing an improvement of 267 places in just one year and 306 places since 2024.
The UI GreenMetric rankings evaluate universities across key sustainability indicators, including Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education, and Governance and Digitalisation. LASU’s performance reflects its continued efforts to integrate environmental responsibility, sustainability, innovation, and responsible institutional practices into its operations.
The University’s international profile within the UI GreenMetric network has also continued to grow. In August 2026, LASU’s National and Regional Coordinatorship was renewed, while the University was elevated to Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The achievement is a reflection of the collective efforts of the University Management, staff, students, units, and committees contributing to LASU’s sustainability agenda. It further strengthens the University’s growing reputation for academic excellence, sustainable development, innovation, responsible governance, and institutional transformation.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi BADEJO, FCASSON, FAPROCON, MNAE, congratulated the entire LASU community on the achievement and commended everyone whose dedication continues to advance the University’s sustainability initiatives.
Building on the achievements of previous administrations, LASU’s latest UI GreenMetric performance highlights the University’s continued progress and its ambition to remain a leading institution in Africa and on the global higher-education landscape.
